Here is a piece of arithmetic worth taking literally. Cryopreservation is often dismissed as a long shot, and it is. The mistake is thinking that settles the question. A long shot against a certainty of zero is not the same kind of bet as a long shot against a fair coin, and confusing the two is how otherwise careful people talk themselves into the worse option.
This is not rhetorical flourish. It is a straightforward consequence of how anyone should evaluate choices that involve irreversible loss. Once you see the structure, the supposed wishful thinking turns out to live on the other side of the argument.

Expected value, applied to the largest stake there is
Expected value multiplies probability by outcome. A 50% shot at 100 EUR is worth 50 EUR. A 1% shot at 10,000 EUR is worth 100 EUR, more than the coin flip, because a low probability still produces high expected value when the payoff is large enough. Now point that lens at continued existence. Whatever number you put on it, years of experience, relationships, learning, the simple fact of being around, an honest figure is enormous.
Multiply even a modest restoration probability by a payoff that large and the expected value stays substantial. A 10% chance at fifty more healthy years is worth five expected years. At 1% it is still six months. At 0.1% it is roughly two weeks of expected additional life, bought once, that you would otherwise have flatly written off. And from the inside it runs deeper than the table suggests, because you experience every future in which you exist and none in which you do not. The subjective weight of any non-zero chance of continuation dwarfs certain termination.
The zero is the part people skip
Conventional death offers a 0% chance of continuation. Not low, not uncertain, definitively zero. Past a certain point the information that is you degrades and no conceivable intervention recovers it. Burial and cremation are the options that lock that zero in.
Biostasis offers an uncertain but non-zero probability. Maybe 1%, maybe 10%, maybe higher depending on what you believe about future technology. The exact figure matters far less than that it is not zero, because any positive probability of a sufficiently valuable outcome beats certain loss. The jump from 0 to 0.01 is categorically different from the jump from 0.01 to 0.02. One crosses the line between impossible and possible. The other is just arithmetic.
The downside is bounded. The other downside is everything.
Rational evaluation looks at both ends, so look at the downside of trying. If cryopreservation fails, you have spent money that could have gone elsewhere, and some emotional investment in a possibility that did not land. Real costs, worth naming, and bounded.
Now the downside of not trying, in the world where it would have worked. You are permanently gone when continuation was achievable. Everyone who loved you lost you unnecessarily. Every future experience, eliminated for nothing. The asymmetry is stark and it is the whole argument: failed preservation costs resources, missed preservation costs everything. When one arm of a bet is bounded and the other is unbounded, the direction of the rational choice is not subtle.
We take long shots all the time when the math says to
People buy lottery tickets at absurd odds, found companies that usually fail, chase research problems that rarely resolve. These are not irrational when the payoff justifies the cost despite the low probability. Cryopreservation runs on identical logic with a far better payoff-to-cost ratio than a lottery ticket, because the prize is not money, it is the continuation of the one entity doing the valuing.
Which flips the usual accusation. Critics call preservation irrational hope or denial. The math says the reverse: refusing it, when you genuinely value continued existence, is choosing certain loss over uncertain possibility. The truly irrational move is the guaranteed permanent ending while a real alternative sits on the table. This is the same reasoning you already apply to insurance, pointed at the largest downside there is.
How low is too low?
So where is the threshold? It depends on your values and your costs, and it sits lower than people expect. If preservation genuinely caused hardship, genuinely undermined your family's welfare, then even a 5 to 10% probability might not justify it, and that is a legitimate weighting. But for most people considering it, the spend comes out of discretionary income, the money that would otherwise fund another vacation or upgrade. Membership starts around 50 EUR a month under 35, reduced to roughly 25 EUR on demonstrated need; the full cost is funded through life insurance, not paid in a lump.
Against that baseline, even 1% clears the bar for many people. One chance in a hundred of additional decades, of seeing how the story turns out, against one more restaurant meal: the value ratio is not close. Some will reasonably want 10% or 25% before it feels right, and that is fine. What does not survive scrutiny is demanding near-certainty, because that misreads the decision entirely. You are not comparing likely success against likely failure. You are comparing a non-zero chance against zero.
We are guessing at the probability, and that is fine
We genuinely do not know cryopreservation's success rate. No one has been preserved, stored for decades, and revived, and we say plainly that revival is currently not possible. Estimates vary wildly by temperament: optimists say 50% or more, pessimists 1% or less, all of it downstream of beliefs about future technology, institutional durability, and current vitrification quality. The honest answer is a wide error bar.
But the structure rescues the decision from the uncertainty. Even at a pessimistic 0.5%, that is one chance in two hundred of continuation against zero, and the math still favors preservation if you value continuing and can afford it. We make consequential choices under uncertainty constantly, educations that might not pay, careers with uncertain outcomes, and we do not demand certainty first. Cryopreservation simply has a cleaner asymmetry than most: worst case, wasted resources; best case, everything; alternative, certain permanent loss.
You are not betting a likely win against a likely loss. You are betting a small chance of everything against a guarantee of nothing, and that is the easiest bet in the world to get right.
Uncertainty should make us humble about predictions. It should not paralyze the decision. When the downside is bounded and the upside is unbounded and the alternative is a locked-in zero, reasonable people should lean toward keeping the option open. A small chance is not a large chance. It is just infinitely larger than no chance at all.
