Choosing the right cryonics provider

How to compare cryonics providers without overthinking it: the four things that actually vary between Tomorrow.bio, Alcor, and the Cryonics Institute, and how to weigh them.

Here is a question worth taking seriously before you let it paralyze you: which provider should you trust with the one decision you cannot personally supervise? It is a fair thing to agonize over. You are arranging care for a moment when you will not be able to speak for yourself, and the instinct to get it exactly right is sound. But the instinct can also become a trap. No provider has a flawless record. No option removes every risk. No amount of comparison converts a probabilistic bet into a certainty. The useful move is not to find the perfect provider. It is to understand what actually differs between the serious ones, decide which differences matter for your life, and then commit.

Three established providers will come up: Alcor in Arizona, the Cryonics Institute in Michigan, and Tomorrow.bio, which we run out of Europe and increasingly the United States. Each has built its approach over years in a small field. The differences that matter are fewer than the brochures suggest. They cluster around four things: how fast someone reaches you, how the preservation itself is done, where you are stored, and how painless it is to actually sign up. Everything else is detail.

The clock starts the instant your heart stops

To compare providers sensibly, you have to know what they are racing against. The moment legal death is pronounced, the body starts to dismantle itself while still near normal temperature: enzymes resume cutting, oxygen runs out, and the brain's structure starts to degrade. This is the race against cellular decay, and it is the reason a phone number is not a standby plan. A good provider gets people to you quickly, cools the body, keeps blood moving long enough to buy time, and gets cryoprotectants into the tissue before ice can form. Those agents let tissue set into a glass-like state instead of crystallizing, the process called vitrification, after which the patient rests in liquid nitrogen at -196°C, where biological time effectively stops. Every provider is trying to win the same race. They differ in how they run it.

Standby is the part that varies most by where you live

The first real question is geographic: is there a trained team close enough to reach you in hours, wherever you actually are? This is where providers diverge sharply. Some operate in one country or a handful of regions; others have built networks across continents. Tomorrow.bio includes full standby in the membership, with teams based in Berlin and Amsterdam covering Europe, where we started, and growing coverage in the United States beginning with states like New York, California, and Florida. Our standby is not a hotline. It is a dedicated biostasis ambulance, stocked like a mobile operating room. The people who staff it are trained in the protocol. It is registered as a funeral vehicle, so it can cross EU borders to reach you. Alcor includes standby and stabilization in its membership with a US focus, with global cases sometimes adding response time or fees. The Cryonics Institute offers standby as an optional add-on through partners such as Suspended Animation rather than as standard, and otherwise leans on local resources for distant members. If you travel or expect to move, weigh reach heavily. A superb procedure that arrives six hours late has already lost much of what it was protecting.

Where the cryoprotectant goes in matters more than the brand of it

The second question is where perfusion actually happens. Pushing cryoprotectant through the vascular system as close as possible to the place of death, before transport, gives the best shot at even distribution and the least ischemic damage. Tomorrow.bio performs whole-body field cryoprotection: the ambulance carries the equipment to perfuse on site, which shortens the window in which tissue sits unprotected. Alcor's field cryoprotection covers the brain, with whole-body perfusion performed after transport to its Arizona facility. The Cryonics Institute uses vitrification formulas for whole-body cases but typically perfuses after transport to its Michigan facility, which suits members near the facility and adds time for those far from it. The principle to hold onto is simple: the goal is even vitrification across as much tissue as possible, and minutes of delay are paid for in fidelity. Match the procedure to that, not to marketing.

Storage is a hundred-year institutional problem, not just a cold one

Storage is the part that has to outlast you, possibly by centuries, which makes it as much an institutional question as a technical one. Liquid nitrogen is the easy part: it holds -196°C with no electricity, needing only periodic topping up. The harder question is who keeps the lights on, and where. Tomorrow.bio stores patients in a dedicated facility in Switzerland. The non-profit European Biostasis Foundation operates it, and it was set up specifically for long-term care. Membership funds are invested so storage costs stay covered. The facility has seismic reinforcement, backup power, and round-the-clock monitoring. The Swiss location is a deliberate bet on political and legal stability. Alcor stores in Arizona with solid US-based security. The Cryonics Institute uses cryostats in Michigan and folds perpetual storage into its base fee. Separating the storage non-profit from the operating company is one structural answer to the uncomfortable question of what happens if the provider fails, which deserves a real answer rather than a shrug.

Quality checks, options, and the friction of signing up

A few smaller differences can still tip a decision. After preservation, can anyone verify it worked? Tomorrow.bio runs a CT scan on every case. The result is shared with members yearly. The scan maps density to spot unfilled regions or fractures. What it shows feeds back into the protocol. This is closer to a final exam than to a marketing claim. It is not yet routine across the field. On what gets preserved: Tomorrow.bio and Alcor both offer whole-body and brain-only. The Cryonics Institute does whole-body only, on the view that keeping everything maximizes the revival shot. Pet preservation is available at all three, with different conditions. Finally, friction. Alcor and the Cryonics Institute still involve some posted or in-person paperwork. None of this is decisive on its own, but transparency and low friction are reasonable proxies for an organization that takes the long job seriously.

What the numbers actually are

Costs are concrete, so here they are without softening. Tomorrow.bio membership runs about 50 EUR a month in Europe, or 55 USD in the US. Whole-body cryopreservation is roughly 200,000 EUR. Brain-only is roughly 75,000 EUR. That figure includes standby, field perfusion, CT scans, transport to Switzerland, and long-term storage. Most members fund this through life insurance rather than cash, which is why the monthly number is the one that matters day to day. Alcor charges around 220,000 USD for whole-body or 80,000 USD for neuro, with annual dues starting near 200 USD and possible extras for international transport. No provider can promise revival, but a good one can make the path from today to that uncertain future as short and as well-guarded as the science currently allows.

So compare without overthinking it.
