The process of cryopreserving a patient relies on effective cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) and specialized equipment. This technology allows the core temperature of patients to be lowered to about -125°C, where they pass the glass transition temperature and are officially vitrified. From here, temperatures continue to lower until they reach that of liquid nitrogen (-196°C), which is necessary for long-term storage. CPAs help reduce the formation of ice crystals, thus increasing the quality of long-term preservation. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed before rewarming capabilities and revival can be achieved.
