Cryonics has lived for decades in the gap between science fiction and science, and the fiction got there first. The result is a set of sticky misconceptions that have very little to do with the actual procedure, which is a careful piece of medicine grounded in physics, chemistry, and the preservation of information. Most of the confusion comes from mistaking what cryopreservation is for what people either hope or fear it to be. 1. "Cryonics means freezing a body in ice"
This is the oldest one: a person stored like a frozen dinner, waiting to be thawed. In reality, modern cryopreservation works hard to avoid ice entirely. The water in the cells is replaced with protective solutions and the body is cooled into a glass-like solid, a process called vitrification. The goal is not to freeze but to stop decay without the crystal damage that freezing would cause. It is the opposite of a deep freeze, not an example of one.
2. "Cryonics tries to bring back the dead"
Cryonics does not claim to resurrect the dead. It intervenes at a specific threshold: the point where today's medicine can no longer keep someone alive, but the biological information in the brain is still physically present. It treats death as a process rather than a single instant, and tries to preserve the structure before that process erases it. The preserved person is framed not as a corpse but as a patient in critical condition, waiting for treatment that does not exist yet.
3. "People have already been revived"
No human has ever been revived from cryopreservation, and we say so without hedging. Cryonics is preservation in anticipation of a future capability, not a demonstrated round trip. Vitrification itself is reversible at small scale: human embryos and eggs are routinely vitrified, stored in liquid nitrogen, warmed, and go on to develop normally. The unsolved problem is scale, since loading cryoprotectant evenly through a whole brain and cooling that much tissue is a far harder problem than doing it to a few cells. 4. "It is a scam or pseudoscience"

5. "You will wake up one day exactly the same, unchanged"

6. "It is only for the rich or the eccentric"
Because the headline cost is high, cryonics gets filed under billionaire hobby. But most people fund it through life insurance, in modest monthly payments, the same way they fund other end-of-life arrangements. What marks a cryonics member is not wealth but a willingness to act on the possibility that future medicine solves what current medicine cannot. 7. "Once preserved, the future takes care of everything"
Preservation is only the first step, not the finish line. Holding cryogenic conditions stable for decades or centuries takes durable organizations, reliable funding, and continuous oversight, and revival depends on choices future generations have not made yet. The funding for that is held apart from the operating company: the long-term storage fee is paid to a separate Swiss foundation that holds and invests it, so upkeep is covered by that capital rather than by revenue from new members. Treating cryonics as a tidy escape hatch ignores the long institutional commitment it actually requires, the subject of building organizations meant to last.
